Anderson Falls is a thriller following Detective Jeff Anderson who, after his wife's suicide, becomes convinced that she has been murdered. I guess this is to show he's cracking up, but this surreal "flourish" was inadvertently comical. The detective figures this out by creating a huge collage on the walls of his apartment made up of photographs of all the women who committed suicide in the area in the same manner his wife did. Darkness Falls fails all up and down the line. There is a rash of similar suicides in LA. His memories of her involve golden sunset light, and the two of them staring lovingly at one another, smiling. Her husband is Jeff (Shawn Ashmore) a detective on the LA police force. Please give the movie director a dick of the year award. How many times would you find it credible that angry, determined people--particularly trained police officers--would lose control of their guns simply because somebody reached over and grabbed it from them? The entire movie is just nonsense, like some poorly made television movie with no basis in reality at all.
I lost count how many time the detective gave up his gun to the killer, even inside the interrogation room.
Darkness Falls wants to tell the story of an obsessed character whom nobody will believe, but all of the characters simply yell at each other, occasionally throwing tantrums. With a cast of this calibre I really can't understand why a movie would turn out this badly. Guys, don't watch this POS, it's honestly the worst movie I have ever seen.
With an unmoving camera, the woman is shown pinned against a wall by the two intruders and, as one holds a gun to her head, the other slowly shoves a lethal amount of sleeping pills down her throat.
Detective is looks like Brad Pitt. Read her answers to our Movie Love Questionnaire here. Clichés are already shorthand, so when you shorthand the shorthand, assuming audiences will just take the leap into whatever "reality" you are trying to create, you end up with a cop-thriller like Darkness Falls: a bizarre series of cliché after cliché, with no real work done to fill in the blanks with complexity, nuance, or even basic human reality. However some flaws too but can be ignorable.
| Darkness Falls 2020 Directed by Julien Seri Synopsis After his wife's suicide, Detective Jeff Anderson becomes convinced that she has been murdered. Metacritic Reviews. Awards 56/100 | Darkness Falls was directed by Julien Seri, written by Giles Daoust, and stars Shawn Ashmore, Gary Cole, Richard Harmon, Daniella Alonso, Sonya Walger, Judah Mackey, and Lin Shaye. It makes him look a little bit like the opening number of "Gold Diggers of 1933" when all the dancers stand behind Ginger Rogers and swoop their arms out, turning her into an octopus-like creature.
Thriller by the numbers and the number is 4. Darkness Falls is a unredeemable as its killers. The detective's mother (Lin Shaye) thinks her son has gone off the deep end, and threatens to take full custody of Jeff's son, until she does a random 180, conferring her blessings on him with a "Go forth and follow your gut instincts, my son" speech. I didn't clock how long this scene goes on, but it's a brutal watch, particularly with the un-moving camera. External Reviews After his wife's suicide, Detective Jeff Anderson becomes convinced that she has been murdered. Skylights – Darkness Falls (2020) Combining high-powered indie-rock tones with soothing post-punk elements, Skylights is an impassioned and energetic foursome from York. Turns out this woman is the wife of Jeff, a homicide detective (a bafflingly miscast Shawn Ashmore), who finds her in the bathtub, an overdose with slit wrists. Only worth it if you must see Shawn and Gary Cole humiliate themselves. | User Ratings
Darkness Falls is a mostly competent and fairly forgettable piece of police procedural; but it entertains while it is on thanks to some fine performances from Ashmore, Cole, and Shaye. It's a suspense-free serial killer drama with the entire focus on Shawn Ashmore's cop, whose wife is a victim at the begnning. June 13, 2020 | Full Review… Gary M. Kramer This is 2020's answer to The Room.
There are so many fine movies and television shows where a detective "becomes" the killer in order to understand the killer's motives, but a bearded guy screaming "I HATE YOU" at some poor dead lady's photo after what seems like a five-minute period is not the way to go about it.

Clichés are already shorthand, so when you shorthand the shorthand, assuming audiences will just take the leap into whatever "reality" you are trying to create, you end up with a cop-thriller like "Darkness Falls": a bizarre series of cliché after cliché, with no real work done to fill in the blanks with complexity, nuance, or even basic human reality. The evil duo's target is successful women, women who have risen above sexism and made it to the highest echelons of their chosen careers. At any rate, none of that matters. Tommy Wiseau would be proud. It follows a detective as he tries to stop a father/son duo of serial killers who he believes made his wife's alleged suicide look like an accident. Shawn Ashmore and all the actors in this , give it there all , but nothing could save this movie with a story line so unrealistic and full of holes, it makes you wonder if anyone proof read the script. Well story and well climax make movie watchable. Felt like watching a rejected entry to film school. He is obsessed with the idea it was murder and is out to find the killers. He goes into a psychotic fugue-state, staring at the wall. Maybe it was trying to be something 'different and original' but failing miserably. The problem with clichés comes when they are used as lazy shorthand. The plot seemed ridiculous, shallow and unrealistic.
None of the cops in this police drama seem like real cops, and the killers are just as unbelievable. A leading character with a compelling setup helps as well, although the feeling of familiarity cannot be avoided.
They can be useful, and most stories utilize them to some degree. Free (& Subscription) Games for All Platforms: New & Upcoming, November Preview: 19 TV Shows & New Movies to Watch at Home.
I don't even understand why someone would bother releasing this without trying to fix the plot holes and get it to make sense.

He is so grief-struck that not only does he go off the rails trying to solve her homicide (which no one believes is a homicide), he also makes the radical choice to grow a beard. So many things wrong it's hard to sum up so would just suggest a hard pass and save an hour and a half out of your life you can never get back.
There is nothing wrong with the directing, acting or screenwriting, and it's never dull or boring. There's a truly weird moment when the film suddenly turns black-and-white, and instead of seeing one Shawn Ashmore, you see five of him, against a black background, each one making different wild faces at something off-camera.
Nobody can rise above the material, not even Cole, although he does his best. The decision to film it that way was probably meant to be an "unblinking" look at violence against women, but the sheer length of the shot—not to mention the fact that the film hadn't done any work to establish her as a human being before we are forced to watch her expire—was itself "violence" against women, primarily the woman writing this review. French director Julien Seri has delivered a good-looking Los Angeles noir that quickly becomes nearly unwatchable, thanks to wonky dialogue, shrill performances, a flat story, and overbearing music. © 2020 METACRITIC, A RED VENTURES COMPANY. I had no idea what was happening at this point, and realized only later that he was trying to "become" the killer in order to catch the killer.
