The training goes horribly wrong, however, when a group of seven young agents discover that one of them is a serial killer, and is setting about slaying the others. The trouble is that the bad guys in “Manhunt” are, like many of Woo’s earlier villains, only humanized moments before dying. The now-older artist has seemingly tried to broaden his stylistic horizons, as in the sturdy two-part war epic "Red Cliff," and the so-so period melodrama "The Crossing." The long Fourth of July weekend is another kind of holiday for film lovers: The documentary about beloved film critic Roger Ebert, Life Itself, hits theaters and on-demand services Friday. Five men wake up in a locked-down warehouse with no memory of who they are. FBI forensic expert Will Graham is brought back from voluntary retirement to help track down a serial killer nicknamed the 'Tooth Fairy'. But "Manhunt" is also defined by the same out-of-time sappiness and melodramatic excesses that have defined Woo’s body of work since "A Better Tomorrow," his definitive breakout hit. There is nothing new in this movie, but it has it's qualities.
A maniac butchers a fashion model on a Caribbean island and leaves the body to be eaten by rats. Woo created his own sub-genre of hyper-sentimental male-oriented weepies, so it's fitting that "Manhunt," his nostalgic retread of those earlier films' tropes, is also a remake of the 1976 Ken Takakura vehicle of the same name. Such are the meager joys.”, Caligula Ebert admitted he couldn’t even make it all the way through the film in his 1980 review: “Caligula is sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash. If it is not the worst film I have ever seen, that makes it all the more shameful: People with talent allowed themselves to participate in this travesty. “Public Enemies” finds Mann at his most exhaustedly pessimistic, suggesting that all his fabled, mythic chases might really just be doomed figures running after each other down dead end streets. You sift through the detritus, you read the terrain, you search for signs of passing, for the scent of your prey, and then you hunt them down. The joke then seems more intense and relevant. This scene—which concludes with an exciting shoot-out between a bunch of unruly yakuza gangsters, and Rain and Dawn (the latter two of whom are now revealed to be a pair of highly trained assassins)—has led some festival-goers to mis-classify "Manhunt" as a "parody" of Woo's signature style. Mann evokes an atmosphere of horror by imaginatively using locations and photography to show the aftermath of the crimes, which also helps portray the world as perceived by Graham. The scene is introspective in nature. Adapted from Thomas Harris' bestseller "Red Dragon"—which pretty much kickstarted the entire serial killer genre and began a Hannibal Lecter franchise that's still chugging along thirty-odd years later—the most shocking thing about revisiting "Manhunter" is how little violence we actually see. “All I am,” Hanna admits just moments before abandoning his family, “is what I’m going after.”.
