By the end of the third episode, even if there are twists and turns aplenty, it's not interesting enough to keep you going. Kaye was good, Dooley was good, so were all the actors/actresses in the second roles, the children especially.
Along with the main characters, we have the always wonderful Anthony Head as Ed Price (the father of Adam Price). Siobhan Finneran in the shoes of a cop, who realises that her equation with a female friend is blossoming into something more than friendship and later has to deal with the loss of a loved one, has an intriguing arc to explore her acting range. It feels like a lot, and we get the feeling that the storytelling is going to get thin in order to cover them all or some of these characters will be underutilized. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. It's not great stretch to imagine Richard Armitage in an everyman role, nor is it hard to believe Stephen Rea as a cantankerous old git.
However, be warned that it might not be the answers you expect or even want to hear. At the football club after the game, the parents are having some beers while the kids hang out, when a stranger (Hannah John-Kamen) comes up to Adam and says that Corrine’s last pregnancy in 2017, which ended in a miscarriage, was completely faked, done to keep Adam from leaving her. They’re played by Siobhan Finneran (A Confession) and Kadiff Kirwan (Black Mirror episode Nosedive) who have brilliant chemistry in a comedic way. In order not to give spoilers I won't go into detail but there are some major moments which are too soap opera that I forgot I was watching a thriller/ crime mystery adapted from a novel by one of the most successful writers of this genre. He is a huge part of this story as he tries to help Adam Price (Richard Armitage). Based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, The Stranger gets off to an intriguing start here, one that looks set for a twisty-turny 8 episode thriller and immediately asks plenty of questions right out of the gate.
