Looking for Mr. Goodbar is a psychological novel that gets into your head and makes you turn the pages like you would for a thriller written today. A man she picked up in a place called Mr. Goodbar. But it’s that same attitude that appears to undo some characters in Judith Rossner’s 1975 novel, Looking for Mr. Goodbar. In Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Theresa admitted she didn’t think she should be alive, that she should have died when she had polio as a little kid. No one seems to know for sure. It does lose just a bit of its luster for me because of the fictionalization of the conversations and the conjecture injected throughout. What is too much? I feel like if I read it in my teens, I would have felt very……odd…for a while. While there's no understanding why things like this happen, this book tried to give as much insight as possible. Lacey Fosburgh, appropriating Rossner's title, published Closing Time: The True Story of the "Goodbar" Murder, an "interpretive biography" of the real-life murder of Roseann Quinn, which had inspired Rossner's fiction. I’m going to point out a stereotype and note that truckers seem like they would be the kind of people who would find women like Theresa when they stay overnight somewhere and then leave, which is exactly what Theresa always wanted. Friendly and easygoing, she was a popular teacher and had a large, diverse group of friends. I’m afraid the only US trucking book I’ve read is Farrell Dobbs’ Teamster Rebellion. This dangerous taste in men finally proved fatal on January 1, 1973. Then again, Theresa in Looking for Mr. Goodbar has a past that implies her behavior is part of her past, whereas in Tampa, the narrator was sex-crazy without reason that I could see. Fosburgh (who died in 1993) seems more than a little repulsed by the victim, her murderer, and the world they lived in. The events led to Rossner’s novel in 1975 and a film adaptation starring Diane Keaton in 1977. It's a sad, rather mysterious story about a sad, mysterious woman -- the story raises more questions than it answers. I would say armor, but she doesn’t have any. "Mr. Goodbar" is based loosely on the actual case of a Roseann Quinn, a quite, rigidly brought-up, Catholic schoolteacher, who was wholly unremarkable except that she sought out her sexual partners in New York singles bars. A complex and chilling film that inspired fear in the hearts of young single women on the prowl. Although I remember just blasting through this a couple of times (late teens, then, early twenties), I remembered very little of it (other than the sense of un-put-down-ability), so I quite enjoyed your summary of it.
