next of kin (1982 movie review)

Director: Tony Williams Review Day 12: Next Of Kin (1982) Australian cinema has a long history of making horror films, one just need look into Ozploitation films to see that. She learns that her mother had feared that someone was watching and following her. Better known for his turn as the villainous Mick Taylor in the Wolf Creek series John Jarratt plays Linda’s childhood sweetheart Barney and their passion is rekindled as the eerie goings on start to increase. Following the death of her mother, Linda inherits the retirement home that she ran. Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. Featuring fantastic cinematography and good performances, NEXT OF KIN is one of those great $3 finds (on the US Virgin Vision label) and definitely deserves more attention. The cast do a fine job in their roles and the directing is terrific and you clearly can see that Tony Williams has an eye for creating scary scenes that will stick in your head. With its focus on uneasy cinematography, mood building, and mature characters, it feels quite removed from the other horror films that were coming out at the time and almost feels like it could have been some discarded script from a 1940's old Hollywood studio. A young woman named Linda returns to take ownership of it after her mother's death, but soon after arriving she finds that there are several mysteries concerning what happened while her mother was in charge, plus she begins to feel threatened by a malevolent presence that creeps about the house after dark. Yes something evil looms in the eerie hallways and empty rooms of this old historic place, that takes the lives eight patients if I can remember, none of the deaths hardly violent. This is a highly engaging film that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. She is also very good with her work colleagues and the pensioners staying at the home. The acting is better than in your common horror film. How long has he been watching? Your AMC Ticket Confirmation# can be found in your order confirmation email. The last ten minutes of "Next of Kin" suddenly become extremely virulent and outrageous, with a stabbing through the eye and even a genuine head-explosion, but it's too late to save the film as a whole unfortunately. Seriously, hunt around in the bins at your local video store and keep your fingers crossed, because you'll dig this one. So, naturally, when odd things begin to happen at the old folks home, there should be little doubt in our minds that they are actually happening and not occurring solely in her head. The fact that is better than any of the aforementioned films is mind boggling. When she comes back to her hometown to settle her affairs, she feels unwelcome, with only Barry, an old boyfriend (John Jarratt, the evil Mick Taylor in the Wolf Creek series of movies), being understanding. This Australian horror film is a fine addition to the massive genre.

Bizarre occurrences begin taking place as well, almost as if someone were toying with her. Characters really plucked my nerves.

Linda, a young and not-so-attractive woman returns to her hometown as she inherited her recently deceased mother's resting home. There's a problem loading this menu right now. What makes Next of Kin different and, dare I say, so very intriguing, is how very sane our hero appears to be. My main criticism is that the tension is drawn out a little too long for most contemporary audiences to deal with. If this film was an American release it would be held in the same esteem as The Omen, Halloween and Last House on the Left. I found all of that in NEXT OF KIN now out from Severin. Things get even harder for her when she finds her mother's diary and begins to read through it. A stylish, creepy, overlooked horror film.

This one's a treat from beginning to end, for anybody who treasures superbly done horror (and let's face it, people, how many undiscovered gems like this remain out there?). "He was in all those great movies in the late '70s. All Critics (6) (I find it impossible to believe that some good reviews here are not influenced. The film's biggest asset is the direction by Tony Williams.

| Top Critics (1) Total wastage of time. And yes, absolutely, Next of Kin is one of the best horror films of the '80s, a claim that I am trying to be judicious in making (note my very restrained and conservative star rating), on the grounds that people whose taste in the genre I admire have complained about it being slow and unnecessarily opaque. She wears alternatively bright and dark clothes, but never grey. Scream Queen Showdown: Who Is the Ultimate Final Girl? The documentary interviewed Next of Kin’s cast and crew and may have had some influence on its emergence for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray thanks to Second Sight. Next of Kin surfs the low-budget 'Ozploitation' rip curl of the Australian New Wave, and spends its European inheritance on a local almost-ghost story with a strong sense of place. | While the film has it's flaws, it's use of atmosphere is unbelievable. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future. The film benefices slightly from its naturally eerie setting – namely an elderly folks home – and the always secluded Australian outback locations, but the actual storyline is thin and derivative, the lead characters are unsympathetic and – last but not least – the amount of thrills and shocks is unforgivably low.
